The new Simpsons episodes suck
Or is it just me? They have been going downhill for quite a while now, but this season has been painful. I just watched this last Sunday’s episode, and I think I only thought about smiling once. When Bart was in the shrink’s office, he said…
Then I had this dream that my whole family was cartoon characters and that our success had led to some crazy propaganda network called Fox News.
Not that I could do better. I’m just complaining out of love. I love The Simpsons. They were the best thing on TV for years, and it pains me to see this series continuing far past its prime. And, now, the movie? It scares me to think how bad it could be.

Isn’t it weird how the simpsons is trying to be more like the family guy with more non-sequiturs? i’m undecided about the movie…

I THINK EVERYTHING WENT WRONG AFTER late 2001. I THINK THEY GOT NEW WRITERS OR SOMETHIN’. It’s not hard to understand that after 18 seasons you’d run out of ideas. GAY MARRIAGE AND OTHER CURRENT EVENTS JUSt DON”T MIX WITH WHAT THE SIMPSONS ONCE was. I’ve been watching all my life. I’m only 16 and nothing in my life is more important. THE SIMPSONS SHOULD HAVE GONE OUT In A BLAZe OF GLORY. INSTEAD IT”S GONNA BURN OUT UNFUNNY AND IRRELEVANT TO WHAT THE SIMPSONS STOOD FOR. THE MOVIE I HAVE NOT YET DECIDED WHETHER I”LL SEE IT OR NOT. WHEn THE SIMPSONS ENDS THE WORLD WILL BE A LOT LESS BRIGHTER.

New Simpsons are NOT Funny!
It’s an atrocity! The new Simpsons “humor” is pathetic, boring, and painful, unfortunately I don’t know who is behind the degeneration of what used to be one of the most creative and funny cartoons ever, otherwise I would force those people to watch their own crap with their eyelids forced open with scotch tape (Clockwork Orange style)
I am only left to speculate that the script writers at the Fox Corporation have been attacked by brain eating maggots and thus – “new and improved!” format where every scene is dull and in conclusion has some sarcastic and boring politically correct message for the viewer.
Fox Corporation, if you’re reading this, on behalf of American people, please look into this matter or pretty soon you’ll have cheap day laborers from Guatemala writing your Simpsons episodes, if they haven’t already.

The show isn’t funny anymore. I wish it would go away. The show never used to be huge on pop culture on politics, and that’s what made it funny.

I agree. The new episodes are painfully unfunny. In think it was in that prison episode where Homer syas: “I only did what i thought was right…in a manner befitting a french monarch.” WTF!?! This is rediculously out of character and just plain pretentious. I think the new writers just like to get off on how smart and satirical they are, as opposed to keeping a comedic tradition that used to put all that Family Guy, American Dad and Adult Swim crap to shame.

I think the writers of the new episodes base the humor around a big event such as a family holiday or celebrity guests, rather than putting in more effort and coming up with something fresh and innovative.
I heard that the reason that the recent episodes were so bad was because the regular writers had been working on the movie for ages to make it perfect. I would love for this to be true but have a feeling it could just be a rumor.

As someone from the UK, I can say that I miss the old style of Simpsons as much as people in America clearly do.
The new episodes try to copy the randomness of Family guy, and try to cram each episode with moral preaching. The old episodes often had some moral to the story, but it was never shoved down peoples’ throats.
I don’t understand how the people in charge could let the scripting slip so badly. The film had a few good momnets, but ultimately, it was only slightly less worse then the new episodes.
Myabe it would be best just to end it, if they can’t get back what made the Simpsons great.

I totally agree. The Simpsons were great, the best comedy thing on tv. However, after they made new episodes, i think it is starting from season 10, things have been completely different and way less funny. It is just a tragedy that they changed the Simpsons so much. I think the reason is that they try to reach more people, so they produce average comedy that people from a wider age range can appreciate. It is too bad that the hard-core Simpsons fans have to pay the price, and still i wonder if many people like the “new” Simpsons.
I am buying DVDs coz i am a big fan, however I will not buy any DVDs after season 9 since it went so much downhill from here.

Yeah I totally agree – the Simpsons suck now for sure. I havent seen the movie and don’t think I want to. The old episodes from the 90s are probably the best shows that have ever been on TV. Matt Groening said that the reason people are saying that the new episodes are inferior is because they are matching them up against a fond memory, which he says is a standard problem for comedies. Well I’m pretty damn sure that they actually just really, really, really, suck. Big Time.

I think it’s still funny. The plot moves quickly and covers more ground; and the themes depart from the regular simpons “reality” that we are used to. But that opens up Simpsons to a new level of situations and comedy.
Perhaps it is unsettling to us long time viewers because characters are responding in unexpected ways. But just because it is different, doesn’t mean it sucks. There is less drama now, and the plot is more fun/light.
There are definitely more pop-culture references, which I think is pretty funny, because we can relate to it more.
There are still plenty of similarities between older simpsons and now. I laughed quite a bit watching the newer episodes.
I think it’s great when a show can change with culture trends through multiple generations, instead of limiting its style and thus fading out (most tv shows only last a few years if they can make it past their 1st season).

No, no… they suck. New episodes are terribly strained- the actors really don’t seem very involved in their work, it’s more like a recital than a performance. The writing’s really weird, focused on off beat slapstick remarks than carefully sculpted plots and script like the old episodes. Movie was the same.

They’ll never stop The Simpsons.
Have no fear, they’ve got stories for years.
Like, Marge becomes a robot.
Maybe Moe gets a cell phone.
Has Bart ever owned a bear?
Or, how ’bout a crazy wedding?
Where something happens and do-do-do-do-do…
No, but seriously. I’m 20 years old and The Simpsons is literally the cartoon sitcom of my generation. I have all the seasons, one through the last between DvD’s and my Computer. The show isn’t going downhill, it’s changing to keep up with the times like it’s always done, and you’d know if you watched season 1-19
that it consistantly has changed it’s humor but not always in such a dramatic way. For the most part it’s still the same Simpsons, and the ratings are as high as ever. But you have these anti-trend followers who think that changing with the beat is the most horrible and blasphemous thing you can do. Seriously, suck my non-existent balls and shut your whiny mouth. If you don’t like the episodes, don’t watch them.

I have been trying to tell people this for a while now but no one seems to listen. I absolutly love the OLDER simpsons but…not this new crap theyre crap they are trying WAY TOO hard. It seems like the jokes now have been used to death and it sucks. Definitly has to be new writers but how could they let it get THIS bad? As homer got more and more stupid the show was getting less and less funny and i think most all agree that he has pretty much hit rock bottom. I mean he wasnt always that bright or anything but now its just too much. I mean i remember forcing myself to watch one of the new ones till homer said this: “1, 2, 3 banana” I mean WTF?!?! I’m just too disgusted to watch anymore. They need to end it now.

Keeping with times? I wouldn’t mind a change but they don’t need to follow the fads, even if they do they can atleast do a better writing job. it’s like somethings happening…and the Homer comes from know where [literally] and starts yapping on. I mean Im 15, I didn’t grow up with The Old Episodes…so keep that in mind that mite not be the pont for most people.

The Simpsons used to be the best show but sadly I fear its over for our yellow friends. Their jokes were their brandmark. But when I watch the lattest episodes from season 19… man, it hurts when I watch this shit. Their jokes and references are as unfunny as my grandmother knitting socks. Some people say ”They’re just going with the time” but it seems they’re just trying hard to be funny, as if they ran out of ideas. How come other shows like South Park are doing so great. For example South Park lattest episode ”Major Boobage”. Not only did they make a hell of an homage to one of the greatest cult movies of all times, but also made a great reference to the media. Remember the jenkem scandall? So I think by myself, how come they are able to do so and the worlds best known sitcom isn’t.

I am 19 and I grew up with the Simps. Anything from season 10 and on is garbage. It started to get stale at 8-9. Before that it was gold… untouchable, the best shit on TV. But it’s not like I am afraid of change and reject anything that isn’t similar to what I was raised on. I tried really, REALLY hard to enjoy the new episodes (anything from season 10 and up) but I just can’t manage to sit through a whole episode without getting bored halfway and feeling embarassed for the complete innability for the show to be funny. The writing is awful and the characters who once could brighten up my day now irritate me. In the old days, the entire episode was an arsenal of non-stop comedy… the writers were comming up with so many good jokes that the scenes would change every few seconds… but if you watch the new ones, scenes tend to drag on and on to eat up time. And the movie was trash. I had high hopes for it because people were telling me how great it is…. but I snickered maybe twice, don’t think I even laughed. Please Fox… drop this show already.

Okay, a few things, the best series were from about 2-15 but after that it just goit crap, I mean even the colouring of the show seems wrong, it really should be in 2000 colour. The episodes are boring, unfunny and sometimes don’t even make sense. The movie was okay, but I may be even stretching that too far. Think of it this way, the best episode I think is the ‘Behind the Laughter’ episode, and the biggest piece of crap that should be burned in petrol is the one where Homer was a French Monarch, like WTF?!. How come South Park, Family Guy and Futurama are so funny? It’s because they’re so Politically INCORRECT! When was the last time Homer said “D’oh!” or strangled Bart? I don’t care if you all call me retarded, but anyone who doesn’t think that the simpson’s level of quality is dropping like a stone is as dumb as a post.

The Simpsons level of quality has slipped dramatically. I would say the Simpsons were amazing up until Season 10. A lot of people don’t even enjoy 9, but I thought it was great. It seems though that at the start of the new decade they just slipped. Yeah, season 11 has some winners in there, but compared to the old episodes were almost every episode was gold they don’t hold a candle to them. The first 10 seasons of the Simpsons are its golden era and I don’t think it will ever go back to that. I have no problems with trying to keep up with the times, but the old Simpsons episodes are still relevant, while these new ones have so much pop culture jokes in them that in 5 years nobody will understand any of the jokes. I try to watch the new episodes, but the writer is stale, it seems like they just wrote a bunch of bad jokes and then threw together a loose plot and then they add in a lame guest star. What is this Scooby Do? There is no flow like the old episodes and everything has to be “over the top”. I keep trying to watch them but its painful. Thank god they have those new Futurama movies, I wish the writers from there would work on The Simpsons (actually some of them were former Simpsons writers from the glory days) The new writers are just awful, especially Ian Maxton Grahm, who admits to never watching the show before he was hired to write for it. However, I didn’t mind the movie, I thought it was very good actually and the best things The Simpsons have done in the last 10 years.

A few more things, when was the last time Itchy and Scratchy was on tv in the simpsons? Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, Barney, Grandpa, Jacqueline Bouvier among others haven’t been in it for a while. All they have to do is include them in the episode for about a minute and DON’T base the whole episode about them which is what they do nowadays. They should get Seth McFarlane to be the exectutive writer and demote Mike Scully to something that is less powerful. I know that the simpsons are hard to make after 18 series, but they should go back to the basics that made the whole programme unique and funny. Come on Matt, you can do better!

A few more things:
Bart never makes prankcalls
Where the f*ck is Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick?
Nelson never goes “Hah, hah!”
Where’s Lenny, Carl, Milhouse, the alcos in Moe’s, Ralph, Squeeky Voiced Teen and Kent Brockman?
What happened to Homer’s half brother and his mother?
A good story line:
Marge rings Dr. Hibberts and Dr. Nick answers:
Marge: “Hello? Is Dr. Hibbert there?”
Switches to Dr. Nick up on a telegraph pole who’s tapped the line.
Nick: “No, he’s sick today. He had a hysterectomy! He will be back soon.”
Marge: “Hmmm! Okay, well send someone over, Bart fell down the stairs! I think he broke his leg and Homer’s gone on marijuana again!”
etc…..

um, maybe this isn’t where I should be posting, but did anyone watch the episode this past sunday (May 4th) on Fox? I’m not sure if it was completley new cause I’m never very good about keeping up with the newest episodes but it was the one where Lisa becomes a filmmaker and her film gets accepted for Sundance. Anyway, did anyone notice a striking similarity between the film that Nelson made in that episode and the film that Barney made in “A Star is Burns” from season 6? I dunno, I guess it almost feels like these guys are running out of ideas, and are copying from previous seasons, hoping and praying that most people don’t pay enough attention to pick up on it. I love The Simpsons, always have, but somehow I started feeling a little cheated, especially after this Sunday. I hope they’re not going downhill…

I think the main problem with the new simpsons is that the episodes lack a solid story line, the golden years of the simpsons, probably season 3-8 or 9, had the foundation of good story lines from which they were able to weave in comedy.
Take the episode “Bart Loses his Soul” for example. This is a great episode that is actually a pretty serious subject, at a few points even sad. Yet because of a solid story line they were still able pull off some pretty funny gags.
Other great episodes we all love rely on a solid plot also. Take “Marge vs the Monorail” , “Rosebud”, or “Lemon of Troy” for example.
However the new episode’s plots seem to fall flat, often being random and incoherrent. The satire isn’t clever and the characters are different. I saw one episode where Homer randomly dances around in a tutu!
When I watch the new simpsons it just seems like something is missing. I find myself staring at the TV in puzzlement. I don’t recall selling my soul for 5 bucks so what is wrong?! Maybe The Simpsons sold theirs…
Golden years (3-8)!!!!
May 13, 2008 at 4:14 pm
After Season 10, any seasoned Simpsons fan that knows what set it apart from the rest of TV will notice a massive drop in quality.
It used to be solid plotlines (with a subtle message) with almost non-stop jokes which seemed like the writers spent at least half an hour brainstorming each one before commiting it to script. The end product was 10 seasons of pure gold, with not one weak episode, and some truly unforgettable TV moments.
Now, it seems like the writers are making it up as they go along, and when they get stuck for ideas they just throw in a pop culture/celebrity reference which they think will induce laughter simply through recognition. Almost every joke now seems like it’s gone from the writer’s head to the script in a second, with absolutely no intermediate thought. They think that on past record, because Homer is saying it, it must be funny.
Whoever wrote seasons 1-10: I owe you my life.
Whoever’s writing them now, please stop, you’re ruining a beautiful thing.
Gabe

i think insipid is the word to describe the new episodes. i believe the cheap day laborers from guatemala could do way better at script writing. watching a new episode leaves me so disappointed i can’t even describe the empty feeling. when i watch a re-run i can’t help associating it with the disappointment i’ve recently experienced. i don’t know if that makes any sense. the new ones are for an entirely different audience. if you like the old ones, you won’t like the new ones, and vice versa. someone could you please, please save The Simpsons or let them forever r.i.p.

Yes, they totally sold out the Simpsons. It was absolutely amazing to season 7, untouchable. Then 8 was great with the exception of an occasional halfway funny joke. But partway through season 9 it totally bit the big one.

June 8, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Season 13 was probably the best season made. But after that, ever so slowly, the laugh-out-loud moments have become less frequent. its like a bell curve. The quality rose steadily from 1-13, then bam, it starts to go down again. Now we’re at 19 and it’s almost gotten as lame as the first season. But not in the same way, it’s now bland and repetetive. Sure, you could say that about other seasons, but not NEARlY as much as Season 19.
I’m a hard core Simpsons fan, I own and have seen every episode of every season. It makes me sad at the decline in quality over the years.
However, I did enjoy the movie. I think there was a lot more effort put into it.

I agree absolutely. The new episodes lack everything the old ones had. It used to be humerous social criticism, but it transformed into a bad version of Family Guy, which is kind of pathetic.
The episodes are just a constant repetition of itself. Seems like they just don’t have any ideas anymore.
Actually they should have stopped a while ago. Or, the other possibility, take it to the next level and let the characters grow older.

The old episodes worked at many levels: even the most crazy plotlines (Homer in space, Bart’s elephant) had something to do with actual human feelings. I remember a tear rolling down my face at the end of “And Maggie makes three”. I mean an ACTUAL tear.
The new ones have a bunch of guest stars, lots of screaming, stupid pop culture references, weak plotlines, anti-climatic endings, you name it.
It’s sad.

There have been alot of good points made here. The golden seasons 1-9 were untouchable. They relied heavily on the minor characters in the town who were politically incorrect stereotypes. This formula worked as was able to poke fun at all aspects of modern life. New episodes are just random jokes and references slotted loosely around an awful storyline. Family guy sans laughter.

October 23, 2008 at 4:13 am
Yes, I concur. It’s saddening how love the quality has gotten. I think the problem is that The Simpsons has moved more in the direction of Family Guy, thus removing the show’s identity. Furthermore, Simpsons’ “rubber-band reality” has been stretch too far. Making Bart meeting his double the center of a plot is just too unplausable. Perhaps even worse is that the show has become more “edgy” – satire and political correctness is not fitting for it.

The Simpsons have been going down since season 10-13.
Season 10 was “LOL but not as good as the old ones”
Season 11 was “Haha! What else is on?”
Season 13 was “When is this going to get better?!”
I personally think Conan O’ Brian (Who wrote for the first seasons), was the best writer ever. But since Ian Graham (or something) began writing, it’s crap because he never even looked at the show before he started writing for it. He said it himself.
A lot of the characters have not been in the show in a long time. When they do bring them in, they base the show around it. All they have to do is bring them in for a second, that’s all!
Why couldn’t they get someone to replace Troy McLure’s voice? He was hilarious!
It’s now so “politically correct” and it SUCKS!
I’ve watched ever episode of Futurama since 1999 and I’ve the 2 movies. But I still think it’s much better then the Simpsons. By a long shot.
Futurama has the original writers from the Simpsons and it’s smart humour since most of the writers are Mathmaticians.
South Park, is South Park. Nothing can beat it. Some episodes can be crass, but it’ll always win. It has it’s own style of humour and it mocking everyone equally. I LOVED the Scientology episode. R. Kelly was so funny!
Family Guy is going like the Simpsons. Season 1-4 was funny. 5+6 are gross. They only comment on sexual humour and pop culture is less-present in it. Peter’s also just become a jerk in it.
I think the Simpsns should just go back to what made them funny in the first place. They were the best from season 2-12. Some might have been just crazy, but they still showed actual emotional actions in them.
Matt Groening should look at the old episodes and fire whoever’s writing for them now. Please Matt, do us all a favour! I understand it might be hard to write for them now, but pop culture mixed with good humoured jokes and good timing can reclimb to the summit where it was once in the 90s’.
I really hope they improve soon. Peace.

The Simpsons has gone down hill they should do away with it seasons 1-10 and maybe 11-12 were great but they should advance the show let the characters evolve is the onl answer let them grow older can you imagine lisa bart as teenagers it would make it fresh and maggie as age 10 it has never ending chances to draw new fans and old ones back please matt groening do this or it will continue to be stale and crap and not even a shadow of it former self or just bin it as futurama is now what should be your focus south park is fresh still so why aint simpsons cause you sold your souls for money who agrees with my statment? p.s family guy is for fags hahaha.

The whole feel of the Simpsons changed after series 10+. Barts character has become so pop culture obsessed its cringe worthy,i once liked his genuine mischievous nature but he has now become an annoying irritating brat. homer too has become so ‘commercially’ stupid its pathetic, his dumbness is so fake and OTT its embarrassing, in the golden era his dumb nature was subtle and believable, but now its so forced and out of character. The worst moment in the shows history is the ali g spoof- where homer buys an ice cream van and changes into the uniform in the style of the opening credits to ali g. that sketch is horrible and was the moment that finally made me concede that the simposons is dead.

When we were younger we’d all run to the TV on sunday night with eager anticipation for the newest episode but now…. ugh… I stopped watching the simpsons around 2000 or 2001… everyone here has made VERY good points and I agree with everything they’ve said… The writing was exceptional during the golden years… and how many Simpsons quotes can you recall from the old ones vs. the new ones??? You people KNOW what I’m talking about… >:/

Look i totally agree with you Liz….the uniqueness has left the simpsons and they are focusing too much on making episodes which are based around humour involved in family guy…
don’t get me wrong family guy has its moments but the simspons weren’t made famous for there prolonged scenes….there episodes have become stale and dull and just lack those key moments where you can burst out laughing….
This show is possibly one in only a few where you can look forward to a re-run (that is if it was made in the 90’s).
I try to watch new episodes now but i mainly sit there watching the episodes with utter disbelief in their drop in quality.
To be honest the clever and actually funny humour has fallen and is now to based around the younger generations…the producers have forgotten that the older generations were the ones who made this cartoon famous and looked forward to watching each new episode and re-run but now they have stopped trying (or atleast seems so) and are wasting possible comedy gold on cheesy prolonged scenes.

Wow, I didn’t know there was actually a blog about this. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the new episodes just plainly suck. It’s really sad actually, I’ve practically watched every episode that exists and I have to say the new episodes are so dull. I see myself losing interest on a show I grew up watching. People who sit here and say the Simpsons don’t suck are probably young kids who never got a taste of the good episodes.
In one episode where Bart and Milhouse are outside playing ice hockey, Milhouse’s eyes are covered with a shirt and Bart yells “Car!!!” Milhouse responds “Car???? Car’s the subject, but i don’t know the verb!”. This is the dullness I’m talking about.
I just finished watching a new episode. It’s like watching a cartoon for little kids now. All the dancing and what not. I don’t know where they will end up.

full ack, i bought the dvds of the seasons 1-10, after re-watching all episodes i think that the best seasons were 6, 7 and 8. the last episode of season 9 already sucks and in season 10 it becomes even worse. i don’t even watch the silly new simpsons episodes (only watched some parts of the movie). and im a hardcore simpsons fan who has watched each of the old episodes at least 5-10 times.

What should we care if the Simpsons suck now, sometimes I ask myself, and it’s true it’s just a tv show and Fox as they usually show are in for the money and nothing but the money, that’s when they are not making a fool of themselves broadcasting “news”. But sometimes I think, hell, I grew up with this stuff and I was genuinely happy to see a new episode when I was a kid, now when I see them, they ain’t the Simpsons they are like puppets of the simpsons forced to say the unfunny shit they say now, and it’s sad but it also shows just how they have silly greed, they are making good money with other shows, why should they stay stepping on the memory of a great show like that. But hey what can you do, there are enough dumbasses to keep that shit on the air. And believe me you gotta be retarded to enjoy the new simpsons.

when i first watched one of the season 20 episodes,i just couldnt watch it till the end, it was so painfully unfunny , they really tried to hard by trying to place a gag after every spoken sentence, mostly references to celebrities etc. then i started reading some of the comments here and i couldnt agree more with the people saying simpsons are going downhill and they should be rather cancelled than ruined even more.then i watched another episode, from the same season, and i was totally surprised,as this episode was completely different,it didnt have the new cheap unfunny intro, it was even funny and i liked it, reminded me more of the old eps.i watched some more episodes, and it was kind of strange, as in season 20,some episodes are so completely different frome one another, some of them where completely normal and enjoyable, and some where those new ones with the crappy new colors and 3d stuff, + unfunny jokes and references. so it seems there are some different teams of simpsons writers, some of them know how to make good episodes, and some dont.

i didnt grow up with the simpsons, i started watching them in 2002,so i still enjoy some episodes going till season 16 or like that. im not a hardcore fan but i can watch an episode 5-6 times and its still funny.since the new episodes (seasons 17-20) i stopped watching them.i know some of you say everything after season 10 or 9 is crap, but i still think the following 5 seasons were good, although there were some holes (bad episodes).well, now im stickin to family guy, their humor may be politically incorrect or references, but its at least funny.

Did anyone ever see the episode of the Trillion dollar bill? That is a perfect example of new episodes. The plot makes no sense and goes nowhere. The jokes are stupid and worst off all, it *could* of had potential. Who else agrees?

Hi, i’m from Colombia, and since I also grew up watching The Simpsons, I can’t stand the route it has taken. I’m not trying to sound square in that sentence, but I guess that’s just the way it is. You jus’t can’t watch “Last Exit to Springfield”, or “Lisa’s Substitute”,then one of the later episodes and feel the greatness it’s still there. The humor used to be smart, subtle and not over the edge, now it’s ridiculous, way obvious, and without content. I also agree on the plot issue. They’re just way weaker now, and I don’t even think that deserves to be proved. But my main problem with actual Simpsons is the way the writers have abused of Homer’s figure. I mean, it’s just a freaking cartoon and look at the repercution it has had. Worldwide. That used to be great, because i suppose the idea of Simpsons was to handle with a guy who, despise of all his deffects, was a genuinely good, and even more shocking, pure person. I’m not even talking about being politically correct, wich is what made the show so special, and not another silly popy north american product (sorry, but that’s what it is now) Using more smart, developed storylines, and focusing on the feelings and conflicts of the characters made it universal, that’s why you could cry to some of their moments. It’s like Palahniuk minimalist theory on story-telling: a good story is the one that makes you laugh way way hard, and suddenly it breaks your heart. As for the South Park, Family Guy thopic, my opinion is that these two shows will never be as good as The Simpsons (s.1-8) because of all the elements these episodes had as stories. You know that moment when Lisa is with Ralph on the swings and Chief Wiggum is looking at them while and Monster Mash plays on the radio? I don’t know if that’s cheesy for some, but I think that’s accomplished T.V that South Park or Family Guy won’t ever have because of their same nature as t.v programs.

Long post, but I forgot to mention that even the cultural references were way better. I mean, the way they use Citizen Kane, Yellow Submarine, Batman, in one episode, and in the same, that bit where Mr. Burns acts like The Grinch, while hearing the strike’s song played by Lisa, an 8 years old girl (A hero named Homer, and a devil named Burns) again, excellence. There’s Godfather II, Oliver North’s trial, A Clockwork Orange, Last Exit to Brooklyn, 2001, A street car named Desire, and so many interesting pop music, against Maggie dancing as Britney Spears, Ali G, and a forzed remake of That 70’s Show. So, long story short, Simpsons are dead, and all we can do is to be greatful for the great moments they put out on the 90’s, mainly us, the ones who were 8,9,10 years old while receiving class A television.

Here Here, this (EAOLL’s) is by far the most intellectual comment on this page. I am an avid Simpsons fan but can only watch Seasons 1-9. Anything after that (including 10) causes me great irritation. Someone said earlier ‘why should we care? they’re just cartoons’. Well the fact that we do care is quite amazing. Take for instance Homer’s character from the early days. In “A Streetcar Named Marge” Homer is ultimately a mean character but we still find ourselves laughing with him and at him. By the end he demonstrates he has feelings and he loves Marge despite his problems. The episode also in a matter of 1 minute makes reference to Ayn Rand, The Great Escape, and the Birds flawlessly. We care because in the early days the show was a peice of worldwide pop culture that re-defined television. Almost every new show put on the air has been influenced by this show and the fact that it has been tycooning along all the while is a great feet but unfortunatly, the show has lost all it once was. Instead of truely caring for the characters you find them being the cheap backgrounds for the weekly guest host, zany adventure, and politics.

Seasons 1-8 are objectively brilliant. Episode by episode. 9-11 get gradually sloppier, but hell, they are like Scorsese compared to the garbage that has been put out the last few years.
The new episodes are too frenetic. They have completely lost pacing and the rhythm is way too quick. The things the characters say are completely out of character, all the time, and it’s like the writers think that just because Chief Wiggum or Mr. Burns says something it will automatically be funny. For instance “E Pluribus Wiggum”, when Lisa says to Ralph, “They just want to use you!” he says, “Maybe I just wanna use THEM!” This is insultingly out of character, but since it’s Ralph, it’s “funny”?
My theory is this. In the nineties there was a unique chemistry between the writers at the time. Many brilliant writers worked on the show at that time, so there was an energy going around that brought everyone’s jokes up a notch, and also kept the characters in character and the rhythm of the comedy very paced and appropriate. Somewhere around Season 9 this started to dissipate, as writers moved off, and gradually it more or less disappeared. Now the series is living off the “brand” that was established back then and the wonderful characters but giving them absolutely no plot and terrible, terrible jokes. They will run the show on this formula until it is no longer profitable which could be 15 frigging years for all I know.
Some of the writers moved from the Simpsons to Futurama when it began in 1999, which coincides with when the Simpsons started losing its form. Futurama exemplified the high-quality humor, energy, characterization, and comedic pacing that the Simpsons had in its prime.

I forgot to mention, they constantly delve into horrible politicizing and almost overt preaching, instead of more or less avoiding commentary as they did in the golden era.

I hate the new episodes.
I’d rather watch old repeats that I have seen dozens of times than watch a new episode.
The characters are over-exaggerated version of what they used to be.. and its too much. It’s just annoying. Especially Homer… Homer is way too dumb now.
Every little thing they added into the 3D version of the intro was extremely lame.
It’s sad, The Simpson’s used to be a great show with great humor.. and they were funny without trying.. Now its like they have 13 year olds writing the new episodes and they’re trying their hardest to be funny.

First 10 seasons were great but then they just went downhill. I saw a few episodes from season 20 and it was unwatchable. I couldn’t recognise it as the Simpsons. It’s just random, senseless jokes. You used to need a brain to watch the Simpsons, now it’s made for 3 year-olds.

The writings shit, the plots shit, the characters feel…off, and the jokes are embarassing. its true that due to the unfunny, obvious pop culture references, that the newer episodes will only age badly..
whereas the “golden age” is timeless.
they killed a masterpiece, and should finally give it the burial it deserves.

Sadly enough, dumb people like the ones above raving about how each new episode is so good, so funny…these dumb people are the ones who are keeping this more than dumb show alive.
Why are there so many dumb people?
SEASON 1-9. That is the real Simpsons!

For all those people who say that the golden age was season3 through 8 or 9 then i think thats cutting it way to short. The first two seasons have some hilarious moments, memorable plots and heartwarming moments. Like the first episode roasting on an open fire. I remember i was 10 watching that episode and it was hilarious. Also the ending was brillian by bringing a new member to the family. This season folled with some brillant episodes however there was still some episodes that were not so memorable simply because they were just new to the show and what people liked. The same then followed for season 2.
Also season 10 was very good and in my “golden age” as it has some of the funniest moments ever. Season 10 however had some stpid plots like “bart the moter”. This was bad as i can’t sit and believe that at the end all these animals are let loose and things extinct. Also sure seasons 11 and 12 were rather odd and not like the simpsons however these have some hilarious epsodes with great plots. For example “Trilogy of error” is classic. It was funny a well thought plot with al of them linked together. When you watch that episode you just are entertained and excited to watch the next characters day.
So i believe people critice seasons 11-12 because they see one bad epiosde like “kill the alligator and run” and one bad moment where Homer tranqueulisers Marge and then all of a sudden their on coming on the inter demanding its not good.
Then seasons 13-18. Well what can i say when i read abut how 13 is rubbish as it is one of my favourite seasons. It has really good episodes. But once again one bad episode ” the latest gun in the west” with buck the cowboy all of a sudden the whole series is garbage. Well thats just plain crap. As for the critisism for 14 well im thinking of some great episodes like ” how i spent my strummer vacation”, “The great louse detective” and “moe baby blues”. I bet none of these people even watched it as they stopped watchin in season 11. Yet they can still have the nerve to say its garbage. They should be thankful as its not one of these pop culture seasons. As for 15,16,17 and 18 well what can i say I have mixed felling but heres my thoughts: Some truly great episodes like “24 minutes”, ” The mook, the chef and her wife Homer”, ” the seemingly never ending story”, ” The Italian Bob”,”Midnight RX”, “Mobile Homer”.
They are just the best of those seasons there are still some really good ones
So what i am saying i consider the “golden age” for season 1-13 then i consider the slight decline age as seasons 14-18. The decline there was that it had too many rubbish episodes. Now for 19 and 20. Well i saw all the things that people say is bad about it now. The annoying Lisa, retarded Homer and the pop culture obsessed Bart. The saddest thing for me was the episode ” wedding for disaster” from season 20 was the first episode that isadi what the hell was that is that it my god that was truly garbage. I am now worried
To end all im just saying you guys are way to hard on season 11-18 as it was still good and half of you didnt even watch it. However the new ones are bad. The “Golden Age” is seasons 1-13 for me so i guess im lucky
I AM VERY SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG PASSAGE I HAVE TRULY JUST NOT BEEN ABLE TO STOP
Thanks

You have some nerve to make the assertion that the people who give a negative view on the new seasons never watched them.
I completely agree with all of you. After season 9-10 the overall Simpsons was garbage.
